Smart home installation means wiring your lighting, power, heating, security and gadgets so you can control them from your phone, a voice assistant or an automatic schedule. Electrical Powerhaus installs smart home systems across Melbourne, from a few smart switches in a living area to whole-home lighting control, video doorbells, cameras and app-controlled climate.
Smart home upgrades people actually use
- Smart light switches and dimmers that work from the wall, your phone and voice control
- Scenes and schedules such as morning, movie night or away, set with one tap
- Outdoor lighting on timers or sunset schedules so you never come home to a dark house
- Video doorbells and cameras wired to permanent power, so there are no batteries to charge
- Smart heating and cooling control for split systems and ducted air conditioning
- Smart power points to schedule heaters, pumps and chargers
- Garage door and gate power for smart openers
The best smart home is one the whole household can use without reading a manual. Wall switches should still work as normal switches, and the system should keep working if the internet drops.
Hardwired or plug-in smart devices?
Plug-in smart globes and power points are easy, but they stop working when someone flicks the wall switch off, and they depend on your wifi. Hardwired smart switches and dimmers replace the existing switch, so the light always works from the wall and the app. We recommend hardwired control for lighting, and we choose devices that work with the major platforms, including the Matter standard, so you are not locked into one brand.
Smart security
Cameras and video doorbells on battery power need constant charging and drop out when you need them most. We run permanent power to doorbells and cameras, install sensor lights that switch on when movement is detected, and set lighting to come on in patterns while you are away. For holiday homes, such as those on the Mornington Peninsula, we can set up remote control of lights, heating and pool equipment so you can check on the property from Melbourne.
Smart home repairs and troubleshooting
Smart devices fail for ordinary electrical reasons more often than people expect. A smart switch that resets itself, a doorbell that keeps going offline or a dimmer that flickers usually comes down to wiring, incompatible lights or a weak connection. We test the wiring, check device compatibility and replace faulty units. If the problem is your wifi coverage, we can run data cabling for access points so every room has a strong signal.
How much does a smart home installation cost?
The cost of a smart home setup depends on how many switches, devices and rooms you want to control, which brand and platform you choose, and whether new wiring or data cabling is needed. A few smart dimmers in the living areas are a modest job. Whole-home lighting control with outdoor schedules, doorbells and cameras is a larger project. We talk through what you actually want to control and quote a fixed price in writing. There is no call-out fee, and new customers get 15% off their first service. Typical ranges are in our cost guide.
How long does it take?
Swapping a handful of switches for smart switches usually takes a couple of hours, including setup in the app. Whole-home systems take a day or more, and new builds are best wired at the rough-in stage. We leave everything set up and show you how to use it.
EV chargers and energy monitoring
Smart EV chargers can be scheduled to charge when power is cheapest or when your solar is producing, and many connect to the same apps as the rest of your smart home. Energy monitors fitted at the switchboard show what each part of the house is using in real time, which makes it easy to spot the heater left on or the old fridge burning power. We install both, and check that your switchboard has the room and capacity they need.

Frequently asked questions
Will my smart lights still work if the internet goes down?
Hardwired smart switches still work from the wall. Schedules and app control may pause until the connection returns, depending on the system.
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Many do. Some older homes do not have a neutral at the switch. We check your wiring and choose compatible devices.
Which smart home system should I choose?
We recommend devices that work with the major platforms and the Matter standard, so you can mix brands and are not locked in.
Can you wire my video doorbell to permanent power?
Yes. Hardwired doorbells never need charging and stay online more reliably.
Can I control my air conditioner from my phone?
Most modern split and ducted systems support app control, either built in or with an adaptor. We set it up as part of the job.
Can smart home devices be added to an older home?
Yes. Most smart switches and dimmers replace existing switches, and we check the wiring first. Where an older home needs extra cabling or a neutral at the switch, we tell you before starting.
Can you set up lights to come on when we are away?
Yes. We can schedule lights to switch on and off in patterns, or follow sunset times, so the house looks occupied while you are on holiday.
