Electrical Powerhaus installs and repairs lighting across Melbourne, inside and out. Pendants over the kitchen bench, new downlight layouts, wall lights, garden and step lights, and security sensor lights are all part of what we do every week. Good lighting changes how a home feels and how safe it is after dark, and in Victoria any new light fitting must be installed by a licensed electrician.
Indoor lighting we install
- Pendant lights over kitchen islands, dining tables and stairwells
- New downlight layouts for renovations and extensions
- Wall lights, bedside lights and feature lighting
- Under-cabinet and LED strip lighting in kitchens and joinery
- Bathroom lighting rated for wet areas, including mirror lighting
- Dimmers, smart switches and multi-way switching
Heavy pendants and chandeliers need proper support in the ceiling, not just the plaster. We check what is above before we drill, and fix fittings securely to the framing.
Outdoor, garden and security lighting
Outdoor lighting is where we see the most DIY problems: indoor fittings used outside, extension leads buried in garden beds and solar lights that never quite work. We install weatherproof fittings rated for the location, on circuits protected by a safety switch, with cable run underground in conduit where needed. Popular jobs include recessed brick step lights, path and garden lights, deck lighting, pool area lighting and sensor lights for driveways, side gates and front doors.
Sensor lights are one of the cheapest home security upgrades there is. Placed properly, they light your path home and leave nowhere for anyone to wait unseen. You can see examples of our outdoor lighting, including before and after shots of brick step lights, in our work gallery.
Lighting repairs
When a light stops working, the cause can be the globe, the fitting, the switch, a loose connection or the circuit itself. Lights that flicker, buzz, trip the power or work only some of the time all point to a fault worth finding. Outdoor lights that trip the safety switch after rain usually have water getting in. We test the circuit, find the fault and fix it properly, rather than leaving you guessing.
Planning lighting for a renovation
The best time to plan lighting is before the plaster goes up. Think in layers: general lighting for the room, task lighting over benches, desks and mirrors, and feature lighting such as pendants and wall lights. Put dimmers on living areas, and decide where switches will be most convenient before the walls are closed in. Our guide to preparing for a home electrical renovation covers what to decide early.
How much does light installation cost?
The cost of installing lights depends on the type of fitting, whether there is existing wiring at that point, ceiling access and height, and for outdoor lighting, the distance and ground the cable has to cross. Replacing an existing fitting is straightforward. A new lighting layout or garden lighting with underground cabling is a bigger job. We look at what you want, suggest practical options and give you a fixed written price. There is no call-out fee, and new customers get 15% off their first service. See typical ranges in our cost guide.
How long does it take?
Replacing a single fitting usually takes under an hour. A new set of pendants or a few added downlights is often a half-day job. Garden and step lighting with underground cable can take a day or more depending on the layout. We tidy up as we go and test everything before we leave.
Lighting for safety and accessibility
Good lighting is also about safety. Stairs, steps, paths and entries should be evenly lit, without glare or dark patches. For older residents, we often add sensor lights in hallways and to the bathroom, illuminated switches that are easy to find at night, and brighter, evenly spread lighting in kitchens. These changes are simple and make a big difference to how confidently people move around their home after dark.
For businesses, we also install and test emergency and exit lighting, which must be checked every six months.
Lighting across Melbourne
We install lighting in homes and businesses across Melbourne’s east, the inner suburbs, the bayside and the Mornington Peninsula, where summer means plenty of outdoor lighting jobs. For energy-efficient upgrades of existing lights, see our LED lighting upgrades page, and find your suburb on our service areas page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a light where there is no existing wiring?
Yes. We run new cable from a nearby circuit or the switchboard, and fit the switch where it suits you.
Do outdoor lights need special fittings?
Yes. They must be rated for outdoor or wet locations and protected by a safety switch. Indoor fittings fail outside.
Can I install my own light fittings in Victoria?
No. Fitting or replacing a light fitting is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician.
Why does my outdoor light trip the power when it rains?
Water is getting into the fitting, the junction or the cable. We find where it is coming in and fix it with properly sealed equipment.
Can you hang a heavy pendant or chandelier?
Yes. We fix heavy fittings to the ceiling framing, not just the plaster, so they hang safely.
Can you add sensor lights inside the house?
Yes. Sensor lights in hallways, wardrobes and bathrooms are handy at night, especially for children and older residents.
How do I choose lighting for a new kitchen?
Plan general lighting for the room, task lighting over the benches and cooktop, and a feature such as pendants over the island. Put the general lights on a dimmer so the kitchen works for cooking and for relaxing.
