Electricians for Eltham
Eltham began as a village reserve where the Diamond Creek meets the Yarra, shown on maps around 1848. The first Crown allotments were sold in 1851, alongside a private subdivision known as Little Eltham, and early settler Henry Dendy ran a flour mill here. The post office opened in 1854, the courthouse in 1860, and the Eltham Hotel, established in 1867, is still in business. The railway arrived in 1902 and drew the town centre north along Main Road.
Eltham is famous for its artistic and environmental character, from the Montsalvat artists’ colony to the mudbrick houses that became the suburb’s signature from the 1940s onwards. Today about 18,800 people live here, in the Shire of Nillumbik’s green wedge. It is about eleven kilometres from our Nelson Road base in Box Hill.
Mudbrick and architect designed homes
Eltham’s mudbrick homes, with their exposed timber, handmade finishes and close connection to the bush, are unlike houses anywhere else in Melbourne. They are also challenging for electricians. Solid earth walls leave no cavities for cable, and finishes are hard to repair if damaged.
Many Eltham mudbrick homes were built by owner builders in the 1950s to 1970s, some under the guidance of designers like Alistair Knox, and their wiring can be unusual. We inspect these installations carefully, identify anything unsafe and plan upgrades that respect the craftsmanship of the house.
- Careful rewiring of mudbrick and timber homes
- Switchboard upgrades and relocation
- Discreet surface wiring where cable cannot be concealed
- Lighting that suits handmade and architect designed interiors
- Interconnected smoke alarms for bushfire country
- Solar and battery ready upgrades
We plan cable routes through roof spaces and under floors wherever possible, use neat timber or conduit runs where not, and always discuss visible changes with you first.
Bushfire country and power outages
Eltham’s tall eucalypts and bush blocks make it one of the most beautiful places to live in Melbourne, but also one of the most exposed to storms and bushfire. Power outages are more common than in the suburbs closer to the city, and homes that rely on electric pumps for water or fire protection need a reliable backup.
We install generator inlets and changeover switches, wire battery backed essential circuits and connect fire pumps and sprinkler systems so they keep working when the grid goes down. We also repair storm damage on your side of the meter and can quote underground supply.
Main Road and the town centre
Eltham’s shops, cafes, galleries and services along Main Road and around the station serve a wide area of the north-east. We provide fit-outs, lighting upgrades, refrigeration and kitchen circuits, emergency light testing and fault repairs, scheduled around trading hours.
For community venues such as the Eltham Little Theatre and local halls, we carry out lighting, power and safety work around performances and events.
Solar and self-sufficiency
Many Eltham households care deeply about sustainability, and solar, batteries and all electric homes are popular. We assess your supply and switchboard, plan the upgrades in the right order and install the wiring so everything works together, including backup for outages.
For emergencies at any hour, our 24/7 electricians are on call.
