Electricians for Vermont South
Vermont South was orchard country until developers bought the land in the late 1960s. Most of the suburb was built between then and the mid 1970s, which gives it a consistent look: brick family homes on curving streets, with Dandenong Creek forming the eastern boundary. The name Vermont is often said to come from the French for green hill, and it still fits.
The area has an interesting early history. In 1862 John Lobb bought the Morack Road land and planned a village called Norwich, with a central market square, a church on each corner and a cemetery on Canterbury Road. It never quite happened, but the idea shaped the early roads. Today about 12,000 people live in Vermont South, which is also the end of the line for the route 75 tram. The drive from our Box Hill base is about seven and a half kilometres.
The suburb also has one of the east’s busiest local centres. The Vermont South shops beside the tram terminus on Burwood Highway draw people from Wantirna South and Glen Waverley as well as Vermont South itself, and the medical, food and retail businesses there call on us for lighting, refrigeration and fault repairs.
1970s homes reaching the 50 year mark
A house built in Vermont South in 1972 has now been standing for over fifty years. The wiring is usually PVC insulated and often still serviceable, but the switchboard, the number of circuits and the protection on them were designed for a 1970s household. Today’s households use far more power and need far more protection.
- Switchboard upgrades with RCD protection across every circuit
- Additional circuits for modern kitchens and laundries
- Power point upgrades and USB outlets in living areas and bedrooms
- LED lighting to replace old fluorescent and halogen fittings
- Air conditioning and heat pump circuits
- Smoke alarm upgrades to interconnected photoelectric alarms
We also see a lot of original 1970s features that deserve a look, such as old wall heaters on dedicated circuits, bathroom heat lamps and outdoor lights with perished seals.
Along Dandenong Creek
Dandenong Creek and its trail run down the eastern side of the suburb, and the reserves around Billabong Park and the Bellbird Dell area were once camping places for the Wurundjeri people. Homes backing onto these reserves often have long gardens with sheds, studios and pools at the far end, and the cables that feed them were frequently buried decades ago.
Old underground cables in damp soil are a common source of faults. If your safety switch trips when it rains or a shed has lost power, we test the circuit, locate the damaged section and replace it with modern cable in conduit. We also install garden and security lighting that suits the bush setting.
Getting ready for an electric future
Vermont South has good sized blocks, double garages and plenty of roof space, which makes it well suited to solar, batteries and EV charging. We help households plan all three, starting with an honest assessment of what the existing switchboard and supply can carry.
For many homes, the right first step is a switchboard upgrade with spare capacity, followed by a dedicated EV charger circuit and battery ready wiring. That way each new addition is simple, and nobody pays to open up the same wall twice. If you already have solar, we can check the inverter and connections at the same visit.
Your Vermont South electrical questions answered
Is my 1970s wiring safe?
Usually it is serviceable, but the switchboard often needs upgrading to give proper RCD protection. We test the wiring and the board and give you a clear report.
Can you run power to a shed at the bottom of my garden?
Yes. We install new cable in conduit at the right depth, fit an isolator and protect the circuit with an RCD.
