Your Vermont electrician
Vermont began as bush country worked by charcoal burners and woodcutters in the 1850s, followed by selectors who cleared the land for farms and orchards. The first post office opened in 1881 under the name L. L. Vale and was renamed Vermont in 1889. In 1923, the Mitcham and Vermont Motor Bus Service, said to be the first community bus route in Victoria, began running between the two townships. Vermont stayed an orchard district until the land was subdivided in the 1950s and 60s.
Today Vermont is home to about 11,000 people and sits across the Whitehorse and Maroondah council boundary, between Mitcham, Nunawading, Forest Hill, Vermont South, Wantirna and Ringwood. The former Wunderlich Tile Works on Mitcham Road is on the Victorian Heritage Register, and the Bellbird Dell reserve is a local favourite. We come in from Box Hill, about seven kilometres away.
Electrical upgrades for 1960s and 70s family homes
Most Vermont homes were built on subdivided orchard land in the 1960s and 1970s. They are well built brick houses with good sized yards, and many are still owned by the families who built them. Others have changed hands in recent years to younger families who are renovating.
- Replacing old switchboards that have run out of space and protection
- New kitchen circuits for induction cooktops, ovens and dishwashers
- LED lighting upgrades throughout the home
- Dedicated circuits for split systems and ducted air conditioning
- Heat pump hot water connections when moving off gas
- EV charger circuits in double garages
Many houses have also had rumpus rooms, pergolas and granny flats added over the years. These additions are often where we find the weakest wiring, so we check them carefully whenever we are on site.
Vermont Secondary College, the local primary schools and the sports clubs around the reserves keep the suburb busy with families, and that shows in the jobs we get: extra power for study desks, lighting for backyard basketball rings, and bigger switchboards for households running three or four air conditioners through a hot January.
Bellbird Dell, big gardens and storms
Before European settlement, the Wurundjeri people camped in the gullies and creeks around what is now the Bellbird Dell. The reserve still protects a patch of that bushland, and tall trees are a feature of many Vermont gardens. That greenery comes with storm risk. Wind and falling branches cause damage to overhead service lines and outdoor fittings, and heavy rain gets into old weatherproof outlets.
We carry out emergency repairs after storms, replace damaged service connections on the property side and fit outdoor lighting and power that is properly sealed and protected by an RCD. For homes with repeated storm damage, underground supply is worth considering, and we can quote it.
Solar, batteries and all electric homes
Vermont’s large, north facing roofs have made solar popular, and more households are now adding batteries and moving off gas entirely. The electrical side of that change needs to be planned. A switchboard that was fine with a few gas appliances may not cope when cooking, heating and hot water all switch to electricity.
We assess your supply and switchboard, calculate the total load and recommend upgrades in a sensible order. That usually means one well planned switchboard upgrade rather than repeated small jobs. We also check existing solar systems and inverters to make sure they are performing and safely connected.
Frequently asked in Vermont
Is Vermont in Whitehorse or Maroondah?
Both. Vermont straddles the boundary between the City of Whitehorse and the City of Maroondah. We cover the whole suburb.
Can my switchboard handle a switch from gas to electric?
It depends on its age and capacity. We check the board and your supply and tell you exactly what is needed, which is often a single switchboard upgrade.
How do you install a home EV charger in \1?
Yes. We install dedicated EV charging circuits and chargers, and can add load management if your supply is limited.
