Local electricians for Mitcham
Mitcham takes its name from Mitcham Grove, the farm of William Slater, who grew roses and herbs for perfumes and remedies in the 1860s. For the next eighty years the district was a mix of orchards, brickworks and potteries. The post office opened in 1884, and the suburb really grew after the Second World War, when family homes spread across the old orchard blocks. Mitcham North and Heatherdale post offices followed in 1960 and 1948.
Today Mitcham is home to almost 17,000 people. The shops around Whitehorse Road and Mitcham Road, Antonio Park with its remnant bushland and walking trails, and the rail trench at Mitcham station give the suburb its shape. We are about six kilometres away in Box Hill and regularly work right across Mitcham.
Mitcham also has a strong heritage streak. Schwerkolt Cottage on Deep Creek Road, a stone cottage built by German settlers in the 1880s, is now a museum run by the Whitehorse Historical Society, and several older timber homes near the station date from before the war. Those homes need a gentler approach to rewiring than a 1970s brick veneer, and we plan the work accordingly.
The homes we work on in Mitcham
Mitcham housing ranges from 1950s weatherboards near the station to 1970s brick homes in the hillier streets and new townhouses on subdivided blocks. The older homes are where most of our electrical upgrades happen, while the newer ones need additions and repairs.
- Switchboard upgrades for older homes with fuses and limited RCD protection
- Partial rewires where old cable in the roof has deteriorated
- Split system and ducted air conditioning circuits for hot eastern suburbs summers
- Solar connections and inverter checks for the many homes with panels
- Lighting for sloping gardens, steps and driveways
- New power and data for home offices and teenage bedrooms
Hillier streets and bigger gardens mean longer runs to sheds, studios and garages. We replace old buried cable, fit proper isolators and protect every outdoor circuit with an RCD.
Bushland, trees and storm season
Antonio Park, the Yarran Dheran reserve along Mullum Mullum Creek on the northern edge and the tall gums in many gardens make Mitcham feel greener than a lot of the east. The downside is storm damage. Branches take down overhead service lines, wind loosens points of attachment and heavy rain finds its way into outdoor fittings.
When the power goes off in a storm, check whether the neighbours are out too. If they are, it is a network fault and your distributor will restore it. If it is just your home, or part of it, call our power outage service. We will find the fault, make things safe and get your power back on.
Mitcham shops and small businesses
The shopping precinct at Whitehorse Road and Mitcham Road has a supermarket, cafes, takeaway shops and specialty stores, and the streets around it hold medical practices and small offices. We look after lighting, power, fridges, cooking equipment circuits and emergency lights for local businesses and can schedule work outside trading hours.
Mitcham also has a lot of home based businesses. If you run a workshop in the garage, a clinic room at the front of the house or a home office that needs to stay online, we can add the circuits, lighting and data points you need, properly separated from the rest of the house.
