Electricians for Ripponlea
Ripponlea is named after the Rippon Lea Estate, the grand mansion and gardens built by Sir Frederick Sargood. After Sargood’s death in 1903, part of his property was subdivided to create the suburb. The estate itself, with its mansion and seven acres of gardens, is now owned by the National Trust and is one of Melbourne’s great heritage attractions.
The suburb is a small triangle, bounded by the Nepean Highway, Hotham Street and Glen Eira Road, and home to about 1,500 people. The ABC’s Ripponlea television studios operated here from 1954 until 2017 on land taken from the estate, and Quat Quatta, built in 1890, is a popular wedding venue. Our team is based in Box Hill, around thirteen kilometres away.
Homes on the old estate
Ripponlea’s homes were built on subdivided estate land from the early 1900s, with Edwardian and interwar houses, Californian bungalows and many blocks of flats. Much of the area is heritage protected, and many homes have wiring that has been updated piecemeal.
Many Ripponlea homes still have original features such as leadlight, fireplaces, picture rails and pressed metal ceilings. We run new cable through the roof and under the floor wherever possible, so those details stay intact, and we choose fittings that suit the period of the house.
- Rewiring of Edwardian and interwar homes
- Unit switchboard upgrades in older flats
- Heritage style lighting and switchgear
- Timers and smart controls for lighting and appliances
- Two-yearly rental safety checks
- Garden and courtyard lighting
We test and map every installation first and plan the work to protect original plaster, leadlight and timber.
Glen Eira Road village
Almost all of Ripponlea’s shops sit along Glen Eira Road near the station, with restaurants offering Indian, Mexican and other cuisines, cafes and specialty stores. For these restaurants and shops, we handle fridge and cooking circuits, fit-outs, lighting and exit sign testing, usually before opening or after close.
The suburb is also home to a synagogue and other community facilities, and we are happy to schedule work around services and observance.
Ripponlea’s small size means its residents know each other well, and word of mouth matters. We work hard to earn recommendations by turning up on time, pricing honestly and cleaning up properly.
Transport and apartments
Ripponlea station on the Sandringham line, the route 67 tram on the Nepean Highway and bus routes along Glen Eira Road make the suburb easy to get around, and that has encouraged newer apartments. Apartment owners call us for faults and rental checks, and owners corporations use us for lobby, car park and stairwell lighting.
For households needing timers for lighting and hot water, we install reliable controls and explain how to use them.
Near the estate gardens
Homes around the Rippon Lea Estate enjoy mature trees and a strong heritage character. We install garden and path lighting that suits the setting and replace old outdoor wiring that has failed.
Urgent problems are handled by our around the clock emergency service.
Some homes backing onto the estate also have large old trees close to their service lines, and we can advise on relocating or undergrounding supply if storms are a concern.
