Electricians for Brunswick East
Brunswick East was surveyed in 1839 under Robert Hoddle into long, narrow blocks, a mile and a half long and a quarter mile wide, bought mostly by land speculators. Bluestone quarrying was one of its first industries, and by 1852 the local quarries were exhausted. Homes followed in the 1880s, when the post office opened, and again after the First World War. The Lygon Street tram was electrified in 1916.
In 1922 Prestige Hosiery opened Brunswick’s first textile factory, and the suburb became a centre of the garment industry until the 1980s. Today Brunswick East is a mixed residential and commercial suburb of about 13,300 people in the City of Merri-bek, bounded by Lygon and Holmes Streets, the Merri Creek, Park Street and Glenlyon Road, and Moreland Road. From our workshop in Box Hill it is roughly fourteen kilometres.
The suburb is hillier than neighbouring Brunswick, and its streets climb gently from the Merri Creek up towards Lygon Street. It has become one of the most popular places in the inner north for young families, creatives and people who want to walk or ride everywhere.
Terraces, cottages and factory conversions
Brunswick East’s housing reflects its history: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and cottages, interwar homes, and former textile factories and warehouses converted to apartments and studios, along with many new apartment buildings along Lygon Street.
Many old workers’ cottages here still have small original meter panels on the front wall, sometimes with ceramic fuses and very little room for modern protection. We upgrade these panels and switchboards, coordinating with the distributor where supply changes are needed.
- Rewiring of terraces and workers’ cottages
- Switchboard upgrades
- Wiring for factory and warehouse conversions
- Apartment fault finding and repairs
- Two-yearly rental safety checks
- Shared area lighting and compliance for owners corporations
In converted factories, brick and concrete walls leave few places to hide cable, and we use neat surface runs and lighting that suits the industrial style.
Lygon Street and local businesses
Lygon Street through Brunswick East is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants, grocers and independent shops, and some addresses near the northern end use the postal name Lygon Street North. Businesses here rely on commercial kitchens, refrigeration and lighting.
We provide fit-outs, three-phase work, kitchen and cool room circuits, lighting upgrades, emergency light testing and fast breakdown repairs, scheduled outside trading hours.
CERES and the Merri Creek
The Merri Creek forms the eastern border, and CERES, the well known community environment park, sits on its banks. Brunswick East has a strong sustainability culture, and many households want solar, batteries and all electric homes.
We plan these upgrades carefully in older terraces with limited switchboard space and supply capacity, and we install circuits for induction cooking, heat pump hot water and reverse cycle heating. Homes near the creek can also have damp subfloors, and we check and replace damaged wiring.
Renters and new apartments
With so many new apartments and a young population, Brunswick East has a large rental market. We complete two-yearly rental safety checks with written reports and help owners corporations with common areas and compliance.
For emergencies, our 24/7 electricians are always on call.
