Mentone Electrician

Electricians for Mentone

Mentone was laid out in the 1880s as a seaside resort and named after Menton on the French Riviera, using the old Italian spelling. To keep the theme, streets were named after Italian cities, which is why locals live on Cremona, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples and Brindisi Streets. The post office opened in 1884.

In the summer of 1886 and 1887, Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin were painting on Mentone beach when they noticed a young man painting nearby. It was Arthur Streeton, and they invited him to join them. The group became the Heidelberg School. Today Mentone is home to about 13,000 people, and Mentone Beach runs from the Beaumaris cliffs to Warrigal Road.

Period homes near the bay

Mentone’s older streets near the station and the beach still have Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes, many with high ceilings, original light fittings and wiring that has been extended several times. Further back from the bay, post-war homes and newer units fill the gaps.

In period homes we lift floorboards and use existing roof and wall cavities rather than chasing ornate plaster, and we patch neatly where access holes are unavoidable.

Como Parade and the village

The Mentone shopping area along Como Parade West, Balcombe Road and Mentone Parade is full of cafes, bakeries, restaurants and small shops, many in older buildings. We handle fit-outs, kitchen circuits, refrigeration, lighting and fault repairs, and we work early or late to keep doors open.

Along Nepean Highway, the redevelopment of the old Nylex factory site is bringing new commercial space, and we are set up for larger commercial projects too.

Getting around Mentone

Mentone station sits at the centre of the village, with the shopping streets fanning out around it and the beach a short walk west along Mentone Parade. Thrift Park, between Lower Dandenong Road and Nepean Highway, was rebuilt in 2010, and Westfield Southland in neighbouring Cheltenham is only minutes away.

Being this close to Southland and the Frankston line has made Mentone popular with families and downsizers, and we see many renovations of older homes as well as new townhouses on subdivided blocks.

Renovating a Mentone home

Renovations are the perfect time to fix hidden electrical problems. When walls and ceilings are open, we can replace old cable, add circuits, move switchboards and plan lighting properly for a fraction of the cost of doing it later. We work to your builder’s program and leave clear records of what was installed and where.

Art, history and heritage

Mentone’s link to the Heidelberg School is a point of local pride, and plenty of homes here are cared for with the same eye for detail.

Salt air and summer storms

Homes within a few streets of Mentone Beach feel the salt air on outdoor lights, power points and meter boxes. We replace corroded fittings with sealed ones and move outdoor outlets to sheltered spots where it makes sense.

When a storm brings down branches or trips the power, our 24/7 emergency service can get to Mentone quickly.

Your Mentone electrical questions answered

Why do Mentone streets have Italian names?

The suburb was developed as a resort named after Menton, and streets were named after Italian cities to match.

Can you keep my original light fittings?

Often, yes. We can rewire and re-certify many original fittings rather than replace them.

Do you work on Como Parade shops?

Yes. We handle fit-outs, kitchens, refrigeration and lighting.

Do you use marine grade fittings near the beach?

Yes, for homes exposed to salt air we use sealed, corrosion resistant fittings.
