Electricians for Cheltenham
Cheltenham began life as Two Acre Village. In 1852 Josiah Morris Holloway bought 625 acres at auction and cut it into 370 allotments, many of them two acres. Charles Whorrell built the Cheltenham Inn on one of those blocks and named it after his home town in England, and the name stuck to the whole settlement.
It became one of the earliest communities in the parish of Moorabbin, with a post office in 1857, a Mechanics’ Institute in 1865 and a railway station in 1881. Today Cheltenham is the largest suburb in the City of Kingston, home to almost 24,000 people, the council offices on Nepean Highway and Westfield Southland, which opened in 1968.
Post-war homes and new builds
Most of Cheltenham’s housing went up between the late 1940s and the 1980s, so there are thousands of brick veneer and weatherboard homes with wiring that is now forty to seventy years old. Alongside them, units and townhouses keep replacing single homes as the suburb gentrifies.
- Switchboard upgrades and full or partial rewires
- Safety switch installation and testing
- New home and unit development wiring
- LED lighting upgrades inside and out
- Air conditioning and heat pump circuits
- Solar, batteries and EV charging
When we quote a rewire, we test first so you only pay to replace what actually needs replacing.
Industry, offices and retail
Cheltenham has a large industrial area on its eastern side, plus offices along Nepean Highway and a steady flow of retail work around Southland. Businesses here need reliable three-phase supply, machine circuits, warehouse lighting and emergency and exit light testing.
We provide commercial electrical maintenance, fit-outs and fault finding, and we can work after hours so production and trading are not interrupted.
Parks, schools and community
Cheltenham Park has been used for cricket and recreation since 1872, and the suburb has thirteen parks as well as six schools and the Kingston Centre, which began in 1911 as the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. Community clubs and facilities need safe, compliant installations and lighting that works on winter training nights.
Near Southland
Westfield Southland, one of the largest shopping centres in Australia, spans the Nepean Highway with a two-level bridge, and Southland station opened on its western side in 2017. Streets around the centre have seen a steady rise in apartments and townhouses, and older homes nearby are being renovated or rebuilt.
We wire new dwellings, upgrade older switchboards and add the circuits families now expect for home offices, induction cooktops and car charging.
A few local curiosities
Cheltenham’s western industrial area is home to Melbourne’s only lift test shaft, where lift manufacturers test their equipment, and the landmark seven storey office tower at 1230 Nepean Highway, built in 1993, is now the City of Kingston’s main office. The suburb even had its own fortnightly livestock and produce sale behind the Exchange Hotel by 1880.
Parks and sport after dark
Cheltenham’s thirteen parks and busy sporting clubs mean plenty of evening use in winter, and good lighting keeps players and spectators safe.
