Alphington began with the Bridge Hotel and the Darebin Creek bridge on Heidelberg Road in the 1840s, and a stone arch bridge replaced the original in 1864. Sir William Manning named the area after his birthplace, Alphington in Devon. The post office opened in 1858. For the Wurundjeri-willam people, the Darebin Creek and the river flats provided fresh water, fish and plants for thousands of years.
Alphington is bounded by the Yarra to the south and the Darebin Creek to the east, and shares its postcode with Fairfield. It straddles the Darebin and Yarra council areas and is home to about 5,700 people. The drive from our Box Hill base is about nine kilometres.
It is a leafy, family oriented suburb with a village feel, where the station, the shops on Heidelberg Road and the parklands along the Darebin Creek are all within walking distance. Many residents have been here for decades, and new families are arriving with the paper mill redevelopment.
Edwardian and interwar homes
Alphington East in particular is known for detached homes in garden settings, mostly Edwardian and interwar, with only a few Victorian houses left from the boom subdivisions. Riverside and hillside allotments, such as the old Fulham Grange estate on former orchard land, attracted wealthier buyers with carriages, and some grand homes remain.

The old paper mill site
