Electricians for Black Rock
Black Rock is named after Black Rock House, the grand residence Charles Ebden built in 1856 and named after Black Rock in Dublin. The house is on the Register of the National Estate. The northern part of the suburb was part of Josiah Holloway’s Bluff Town estate in the 1850s, but it grew slowly, and for decades a horse tram and later an electric tram carried visitors from Sandringham station along the coast.
Black Rock is best known for its coastline. The Red Bluff cliffs glow burnt orange from the iron in the rock, and Half Moon Bay has been a yachting spot since the 1890s. In 1926 the hull of the colonial warship HMVS Cerberus was sunk as a breakwater to protect the boat haven, and it is still there. About 6,400 people live in Black Rock, one of Bayside’s most exclusive suburbs, and we work here often, especially over summer.
Clifftop homes and coastal living
Black Rock’s homes range from mid-century houses to large contemporary residences designed to capture bay views, many with pools, big glass walls and outdoor living areas. Homes this close to the water face salt air and wind that are hard on electrical fittings.
- Sealed outdoor lights and power points built for salt air
- Replacement of corroded meter boxes and fittings
- Pool, spa and outdoor entertaining circuits
- Architectural and landscape lighting
- Smart home lighting and blind control
- Switchboard upgrades and new home fit-outs
We choose fittings rated for coastal exposure and design lighting that frames the view without reflecting off glass or glaring towards the foreshore.
Summer at Half Moon Bay
In summer, Black Rock’s beaches, the Half Moon Bay cafe and the Black Rock Yacht Club fill with locals and visitors. Homes come alive with guests, pools and outdoor dining, and electrical systems are pushed hard by air conditioning, pool pumps and outdoor heaters.
Before summer, it is worth having outdoor circuits, pool equipment and switchboards checked, so a tripping circuit does not spoil a long weekend. If something does fail, our 24/7 electricians are a phone call away.
Village shops and clubs
The Black Rock village shops on Bluff Road and Beach Road serve locals with cafes, food stores and services. We provide lighting upgrades, refrigeration and kitchen circuits, fit-outs and fault repairs, scheduled around trading hours.
For the yacht club, lifesaving and sporting clubs, we carry out clubhouse lighting, power and safety work with coastal conditions in mind.
Heat, storms and the bay
Black Rock’s clifftop homes take the full force of southerly changes off the bay, and summer heat pushes air conditioners and pool pumps hard on the same afternoons. Tripping safety switches after a storm usually point to water getting into an outdoor fitting or a tired circuit.
We trace the fault, replace damaged fittings with sealed, coastal rated gear and move outdoor power points to more sheltered spots where needed. For homes with bay views, we also fit surge protection at the switchboard to protect expensive appliances and home automation.
Rebuilds and all electric homes
Many Black Rock homes are being rebuilt, and new homes are usually all electric from day one, with solar, batteries, heat pumps, induction cooking and EV charging. We design the switchboard and supply to carry the total load and work with builders from rough-in to certification.
You get a written, fixed price before any work begins, and a tidy site when we leave.
Your Black Rock electrical questions answered
What is the wreck at Half Moon Bay?
It is HMVS Cerberus, a colonial warship sunk in 1926 as a breakwater to protect the boat haven.
Can you design lighting for a home with bay views?
Yes. We design lighting that works inside and out without reflecting off glass or spoiling the view.
Do you check pools and outdoor circuits before summer?
Yes. We check pool equipment, outdoor fittings and switchboards so everything is ready for the busy season.
Why does my safety switch trip after a storm?
Usually water has got into an outdoor fitting or cable. We find the fault and replace it with sealed, coastal rated equipment.
